This office was a vital part of Cunliffe's research, particularly for the character Mrs. Greendale Post Office was based on the cosy Beast Banks post office in Kendal near to where Cunliffe lived and visited to see how things worked there to get ideas for his stories. His wife's mother would be the inspiration for the character Dorothy Thompson at Greendale Farm. With that, Cunliffe created a village called Greendale, which included many other characters and locations, with most of them being based of real people or real locations he had known in his life. Cunliffe was very fed up, and so he sat down in the back bedroom of his home, and used his old black Triumph typewriter to create a new world, that would be more comforting, and would include a postman named Pat. In 1978, John Cunliffe was alone in his home in the Lake District, as his only child, Edward was at a boarding school near Kendal, and his wife Sylvia (nee Thompson) was a mature university student. Later in the series he is promoted to the Special Delivery Service in the neighbouring seaside town of Pencaster and delivers very special parcels in a how range of different vehicles. In the theme song, before the lyric “your door”, “Letters through” is changed to “Parcels to”.Postman Pat revolves around the adventures of the local postman Pat Clifton in the village of Greendale as drives around on his post rounds.Lewis MacLeod has replaced Ken Barrie in the role of Pat, while Ken still continued to voice Alf Thompson, Ted Glen, P.C Selby and the Reverend Timms in Series 6.This series also sees the introduction of Michael Lam (a mobile shopkeeper) and a new child named Lizzy Taylor (the first ever wheel chair user in the series).Lauren Taylor is now the school teacher, replacing Jeff Pringle. ![]() The new series was commissioned by the BBC and produced by Entertainment Rights and Cosgrove Hall Productions. Pat also seems to make more mistakes in his work since moving to SDS, largely because the new format is always based on one delivery, which has to go wrong somehow (thus often because of Pat's errors). He has a new boss, Ben, who tends to give him instructions (whereas he was his own master before the "promotion"). Postman Pat now has a new fleet of vehicles including a big van, a gyrocopter, a small van that looks just like his normal one, a motorbike (complete with side-car for Jess), a forklift, a 4x4 jeep, a snowmobile and a plane. In his new role, Postman Pat commutes to the nearby town of Pencaster where he collects his special deliveries from the Pencaster Sorting Office. Each episode follows Postman Pat on a Special Delivery mission, from rescuing a runaway cow ( A Runaway Cow) to delivering a giant ice cube ( A Slippy Ice Cube). In the spin-off series, Postman Pat: Special Delivery Service, Postman Pat has been promoted to Head of the SDS and is now called upon to deliver anything. Nick Phillips said that they would be rebranding Postman Pat with a television series called Postman Pat Special Delivery Service, to be launched on the BBC. In April 2008, Entertainment Rights reported a 45 percent jump in annual profit and said it would roll out a 21st century Postman Pat, in the second half of the year.
